Studying at the Clinic

Susan has been attending school for just about a month now. She is studying math, geography, English and science, just to name a few. Here she is studying at the clinic in her new red uniform. The other picture is also at the clinic, with a volunteer and a child who attends the Ddegeya school, in the blue uniform. As you can see, she is happy.

This is a very exciting week for all of us, but most importantly, for Susan. On Monday, September 15th, Susan went back to school for the first time in many years. She will be attending a daily school from now until the end of January. This school will help prepare her for the big day in February when she transfers to the boarding school that she will attend until she graduates. She is so happy to have the opportunity to prepare for February and is taking her studying very seriously. These pictures are of Susan on her first day at the Sydney Paul Primary School.

Saying Goodbye for Now: Tunalabagana

John and Susan made it to the airport safely and boarded their flight around 1:30pm. They will travel through Newark and Amsterdam before landing in Uganda. They will travel approximately 28 hours in all, and be home around 8pm on Wednesday night, Ugandan time. Words cannot describe the success and scope of the past four months. It has been a long journey filled with friends, love and much healing. We will continue to post updates on Susan as she starts phase two of her new life in Uganda. Thank you all. Webale.

Day Before Leaving

Susan and John spent their last day in Boston getting packed and ready to leave. We did have a chance to stop by Karibu and say good bye to Amina. We also took some food to go and had a lovely Ugandan meal for our last night together. Packing and last minutes errands took most of the day, but we spent the time together. Today, Susan and John left Albany and said good-bye for now. We would like to thank everyone in New York for their support and help along the way. The friendships made will last forever. Shriner's Follow Up, Wednesday

This is Susan and her surgeon, Dr. Simon.
Dr. Simon performed the second surgery and checked the progress
on Wednesday. He said that everything looks perfect, and is healing the way they had hoped. Susan will still have to wear a conformer and special shirt for the next six months until the healing is complete.
The second picture is one of our wonderful care coordinators, Sandy. Sandy has been so helpful and provided John with the paperwork needed for Uganda. Thank you both.
(Susan may need one last visit on Monday.)

Trip to Albany

Susan and John traveled to New York this week where they will be staying with the Weinman family for a bit. They will be meeting many of the families in Albany who have been supporting this journey. The Weinmans are loving having them as part of their family for awhile.

Susan had an extremely successful day at Shriner's on Wednesday. Her stint was removed from her chest and upper abdomen and it looks great. She is still bandaged tightly but out of her immobilizers. She can now bend her right leg and is no longer in the chest cast. Everyone at Shriner's was very pleased with the results, as was Susan. She was nervous this morning, but is now very very happy. The picture in the middle includes Sandy, Melissa, and our nurse today at Shriner's. The bottom picture is Susan before her stint was removed.

Monday, Donor Site

Here you can see the donor site healing on Monday. As it heals, the gauze and fluid are removed and the skin is left to return to its natural color. It is still sore, but much improved. You can see that Susan does not look as though she has too much pain today.

Sunday Out

Susan felt up to getting out of the house for a few hours on Sunday. We went to a high school production of 42nd St. and Susan loved the tap dancing. We were lucky enough to request the front row of the balcony and able to keep Susan's leg straight during the whole show. Then, we headed to Friendly's for our post theater meal. It is great to see that Susan's pain has almost gone away and she is feeling so much better than last week.

Susan is feeling better today. It has been a slow week of recovery but the pain seems to be going away. She is still in her two immobilizers but is moving a little faster and laughing a little more. She spent today watching TV, reading, and knitting.

Susan was discharged from Shriner's on Friday. Here she is during first few hours at home. You can see her new donor site on her left leg, which was used for the grafting on her abdomen and chest. She is wearing a cast on her upper body and an immobilizer on her right leg. She will be resting a lot over the next week or two. It hurts her to laugh so we should not have watched Mr. Bean, but we did anyway.

The second surgery was a success. This is Susan coming out of the operating room this afternoon. She will be on bed rest at Shriner's for a few more days. Her doctors said she did extremely well and her spirits are good. She is in some pain so she will likely sleep most of this evening and feel better in the morning.

Snow & Submarines!

Several members of the Providence team spent the day with John and Susan on Sunday playing in the snow on Mt. Hood and exploring some of the nearby forests and snow-melt streams. The day was spectacular, and the snow pleasantly overwhelming for our Ugandan guests!

The previous day was spent back at OMSI watching another IMAX movie, followed by a tour of the USS Blueback which is permanently moored there.

Susan's leg continues to heal beautifully, with one tiny patch (approx. 2 cm) remaining that seems to have a timetable of its own and is testing John's patience!

We continue to stay very busy with John and Susan, exposing them to as much as possible during their West Coast stay.

David Robinson, who went with the Providence team to Uganda was kind enough to host a festive and scrumptious backyard barbecue that was attended by a fascinating group of people from far-flung places including Brazil and Austria. He's pictured here seated next to Sallie Tisdale who led the mission early this year.

After the party we all came home and enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display from the deck of our condo.

Within the last week Susan has experienced two films at IMAX (one of which left her a bit queasy and another that found her reflexively pulling her injured leg back from the jaws of a huge prehistoric shark that seemed about to swim into her lap!) and also the amazing (and highly recommended) Wall E flick from Pixar.

Susan had a splendid day today seeing many of the exotic wild animals of the world at the Portland zoo. Her favorites were the zebras and the baboons with the funny noses.

John and Susan arrived in the Rose City just before midnight on Saturday. We were up 'til the wee hours catching up on all that's been happening in our respective lives. So good to see John again and to meet the lovely Susan!

After a traditional American breakfast of bacon, eggs, homefries, fresh-squeezed juice and assorted fruit, we were off for a tour of the Columbia Gorge. J & S are pictured here in front of the lower tier of Multnomah Falls -- The second largest in the country.

Today is Saturday, and Susan and John are getting ready to leave for Portland, Oregon, where they will be hosted by the Van Dyke family. During the morning, Susan does her leg exercises and then practices reading one of her favorite books, Green Eggs and Ham.

This is Susan before and during her second outpatient appointment on Wednesday. Dr. Lewis was again pleased with the healing of the graft on her right leg. Susan will have to stay in her immobilizer for the next three to four weeks but is doing great. She will be back to Shriner's for her second surgery in late July. This will address her abdomen and chest area. It was a very successful day.

Today is Sunday and after the morning bandage change and exercises, we headed to Newton. John played in a pick up soccer game while Susan and Jackie sat in comfortable chairs on the sidelines. Thank you to Dr. Paul Levy for inviting us to join in and being such a great support.

Rest and English

Still Friday, later in the day, and Susan studies English using her picture dictionary. She practices both saying and writing the words in the book. When she arrived, she did not speak any English. She now knows many words and phrases, including: "How are you?" "Thank you so much." "Welcome Back." "I'm sooo tired." and "I like animal crackers."

Today is Friday, and Susan is on bedrest, playing with her new gameboy, donated by a friend. Susan must now bend her right leg ten times, twice a day. It is extremely sore from being straight for the past four weeks but the graft is healing well. And her left leg looks wonderful.

Susan had her first outpatient appointment today. Dr. Lewis checked the progress of her legs and was very happy with the results. Her left leg has almost healed and does not need to be bandaged anymore. The right leg still requires bandaging and the immobilizer. But Susan is doing great and recovering well. We are very very happy with today's results.

The day has arrived. Susan has been officially discharged from Shriner's and is now home in Malden. She has several follow up appointments for her legs, and then will be back to Shriner's for further surgery at the end of July. It was a long day, but so successful. Thank you all who have been supporting Susan during this phase of her recovery. We will update her progress over the next week as she slowly regains her strength.

This is Tuesday, right after Susan's stint was removed. Susan was able to walk a little with her immobilizer and but needs the crutches for longer distances. She is doing remarkably well give the amount of work performed on her legs. She is happy and anxious to know if she will be discharged tomorrow.

Rather than just sit and wait, we decided to have a little friendly competition in the playroom. John doesn't know that we let him win. Over the weekend, a 2 year-old dog named Mona visited the kids. This was Mona's first time out as a play therapy pet, and she did a great job. Susan and the other children took turns holding her and making her howl. She never barked..only howled on command. Thank you to her family for bringing her in.

Today is Friday, June 6th, Susan's 12th day at Shriner's. Here she indulges in a burger and fries for her end of the week lunch. Today Susan went to the playroom for awhile and impressed everyone with her knitting skills. She has almost finished her second scarf. (A light one for the few cooler months in Uganda.) Susan is scheduled to have her stints removed on Tuesday, and we will know more about her discharge then. She is hoping to go home to Malden, even on crutches, next week.

John stayed by her side every moment and felt the tremendous relief of knowing that a family member has made it through a difficult ordeal. Susan spends her last day at the beach, relaxing but getting prepared for her upcoming surgeries. She is nervous and excited at the same time. She will no doubt have lots of support, from both friends and strangers, as she gets ready to be admitted to Shriner's for her first inpatient stay.

Susan's long journey of healing will now require two surgeries instead of one. Her legs must have time to heal and she may need to stay in the United States until the second surgery can be performed in September. This presents a new set of already difficult challenges, both financially and emotionally. Susan is very hopeful that she will be able to stay and receive the second surgery which will address her abdomen and chest area. This will allow her to eat normally again. Our new goal is to raise enough money to keep her in the Boston area during this time. We also need volunteers to help with housing and care during her extended stay. First Day at Shriner's

On Wednesday, Susan met with the team at Shriner's for the first time. She had her physical exam and pre-op consultation. Many plans were made and the first surgery has been confirmed for May 27th. This will focus on the urgent matter of her legs. Susan was told that she would need further surgery to address the different locations on her body, most importantly, her abdomen and chest area.
After the meeting with nurses and the surgeon, Susan saw the make up artist to learn how to apply skin toner in an effort to lessen the appearance of scarring on her arms.

John and Susan toured Boston today. John found his way from the State House, to Quincy Market, to the Charles River, all without taking out his map. He is thinking about applying for a job as a duck tour driver while he is here. They saw many beautiful parts of town, saw some interesting people, and also met a new friend, Dawn.

After our wonderful but hectic day, it was nice to go home and relax by hanging out and watching Seinfeld on DVD. Susan is laughing out loud (as are we) while we watch Kramer, George and the gang. Jim Carrey has also come to be a favorite, specifically Dumb and Dumber. Physical comedy knows no boundaries.

Susan's First Lunch in the U.S.!

From Ddegeya Village, a region with houses made of mud and no electricity or running water, to the insanity of downtown Boston, Susan and her guardian John, were slightly overwhelmed. To ease the transition, we headed for lunch at Karibu, an authentic Ugandan restaurant just outside Boston.

Susan, a quiet and shy young girl, was comforted to hear Luganda, her local language, being spoken by the restaurant owners. We dined to traditional matooke and G-nuts and were spoiled by the staff.

After lunch Susan opened gifts prepared by children from Bethlehem, NY and various refugee families from Atlanta. Cards, games, crafts and MP3 players were unwrapped, in hopes to make their hospital stay more comfortable. Susan thanked everyone for their generosity the best she could with the language barrier.

As most mothers do, we wanted to make sure everything was in order before our departure back to Albany. The most pressing matter we wanted Susan to understand - what stopped all conversations after lunch as we paused to listen to John translate the sum of all that was happening . . ."We care about you and only want the best for you. We hope you will accept us as your family not only now, but forever."

They're Here! - Tubasanyukidde (Welcome)

A group of 8 enthusiastic members of Team Susan waited anxiously at Logan International Airport for the arrival of John and Susan. The team engaged each other with stories and they practiced Luganda, Susan's native language.

As with any airport pickup there was a little confusion. The team in one area - the travelers in another. The confusion was quickly replaced with excitement and smiles when Susan recognized the Engeye t-shirt. She pointed to the woman, who was Theresa, and the connection was made. The moment we have prayed about, planned for and at times thought would never happen was here....they were here....we were here...together!

BURNED TEEN FINDS HOPE - HELP – AND HEALING – HALF A WORLD AWAY

Susan Nabukenya is a 14 year-old from the village of Ddegeya in Uganda, an eastern African nation. Susan suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns causing serious and debilitating injuries, as a result of being burned while performing household chores.

In addition, Susan’s mother died several years ago, and her sole caregiver is her grandfather, who is paralyzed and is unable to provide care for her injuries.

As a result of her injuries, and lack of access to health care, Susan has endured years of pain and has missed the equivalent of 7 years of school.

A team of caring and concerned people from numerous states, including Washington, North Carolina, Florida, Massachusetts, Georgia and New York, have banded together to assist Susan by helping to cover the many expenses associated with the long trip from her native country for treatment.

In addition to covering Susan’s travel expenses, the team has identified sponsors to provide housing, clothing and car travel for medical appointments. Her surgery is scheduled to take place later this spring, at a Boston-area hospital, and will include a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

We intend to provide Susan post-operative support by providing her access to the education she has largely had to forego, due to her injuries and scarring. The school, in Uganda, will provide Susan access to education, housing, and food. Your contributions and support will give Susan continued access to health care and educational opportunities, and provide her the means to provide for herself and be an active citizen in her village.
